Not sure what psoriasis
is and want to know more about how it
affects a person if diagnosed with it –
then simply explained psoriasis is a
chronic, recurring skin disease. Its
scope can vary considerably; from mild
outbreaks, where the patient may not even
be aware they have psoriasis, to the much
severe stage, which can be
socially disabling and, in rare
instances, life-threatening. However in
saying this, modern medicine is proving
to be a success in stabilising the
condition for many people. There is no
certain age that psoriasis is purely
directed towards. But facts show that
early-onset form of the disease is mostly
seen in 16 to 22-year-olds.
Many medical words
are associated with Greek association;
Psoriasis is derived from the Greek word
'psora', which means itch. Just like obsessive
compulsive disorder that affects twp percent of
the population so does psoriasis. Psoriasis is
not contagious unlike many other skin
disorders. and is known to be
hereditary
Although the
tendency to contract psoriasis is stored in a
person's genes, it is by no means certain that
it will ever develop which is good news for
people who live under threat from thoughts of
contacting the
disorder.

However,
exposure to certain stimuli (such as a
streptococcal infection in the throat, alcohol,
medicines and local irritation) or damage to
the skin may cause an outbreak of psoriasis in
persons who have this genetic predisposition.
Exposure to the suns harmful UV rays regardless
of it being connected to psoriasis is very
dangerous indeed concerning other health issues
like skin cancer
There are two main
types of psoriasis: psoriasis vulgaris (plaque
psoriasis) and psoriasis pustulosa (pustular
psoriasis). To determine severity and what the
best treatments are then these types of
psoriasis are categorized into subgroups,
duration, location on the body and appearance
of the lesions.
The symptoms of
psoriasis vulgaris to look out for are red
patches on the skin or red spots - the first
signs of an outbreak are: the patches grow
bigger and become scaly. The upper scales fall
off in large quantities, while the lower layers
of scales stay firmly in place. When the scales
are scraped off, a number of small, bleeding
points can be seen underneath. This skin
disease can be very discomforting encouraging a
patient to itch and sadly this can only worsen
the condition and should dirty fingernails
pierce the skin then infection can set
in.
Psoriasis of the
nail often manifests itself as small indentures
in the nails. The outbreak can be so severe
that the nail thickens and crumbles
away.
What are the
symptoms of pustular psoriasis and what can be
expected if affected by the condition is a
popular question asked?
Pustular psoriasis
is a rare variation where the infected area
will show signs of inflammation which can be so
severe that, in addition to the usual
abrasions, blisters or pustules containing
fluid appear on the skin.
Psoriasis
treatments would have to be determined by your
doctor or dermatologist, treatments will vary
just as the suffering for each individual
because of the different types of psoriasis and
its symptoms.
